For this years Stab Electric Acid test featuring Noa Dean, i was asked to enter a board. This in itself is an extremely hard task just trying to figure out what to make. I decided on the Shiitake twinzer, my midlength twin with the twinzer fin setup. At the time i was and still am really hooked on these boards so i settled on this model knowing it would be different. The problem is that i knew Noa never tends to veer far from his regular 6'1 shortboard. So i decided to cut down my regular shiitake from a 6'7 to a 6'3. In hindsight maybe it would have been better to keep the length so it would force him to ride the board as intended but we all know Noa is going to ride it how he rides theres no changing him.
By cutting this design down it caused the fins to react differently, having a more sensitive board the bigger stiffer fin didn't feel right anymore and the smaller flexier fin came into play to keep it lively. When going smaller in this design it looses some of that glide (which is what is so magic about this board) and automatically wants to surf more a little more like a shortboard.... It becomes something quite different. Since shaping this one we have actually developed a new version of the shiitake like what Noa rode but we have pulled the outline in and foiled the board out allowing it to roll over rail to rail better as well as dialling in fin placement for the smaller fins which are key in this shape. This smaller performance version of the shiitake will suit those guys that normally ride high performance shortboards and want to start playing with some longer shapes. Or the guy that loves riding a classic fish and wants a twin he can ride in bigger waves. It has some of that shortboard feel but with more glide and feels solid on rail.
For Reference Im 158lbs 5'10 , ride 5'10 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 in the Norts and im riding 6'2 x 19 5/8 x 2 5/16 31.1L in the Performance shiitake.
